The project is coordinated by Karolinska Institutet under the leadership of Prof. Eleni Aklillu, bringing together partners from Uganda, Ethiopia, Sweden, and Italy to generate new scientific evidence and strengthen clinical research capacity in maternal and pediatric HIV care.<\/p>\n<div class=\"first-promo\">\n<div id=\"P465622\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--text-image\">\n<div class=\"paragraph--text-image__text\">\n<p>Opening the meeting,\u00a0<strong>Prof. Jackson Mukonzo<\/strong>\u00a0of Makerere University highlighted the initiative\u2019s public health significance, noting that\u00a0<em>\u201cthe project is a trial for the benefit of the population\u201d<\/em>\u00a0and was established to address a critical unmet need in HIV research and treatment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"P465623\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--text-image paragraph--text-image--right paragraph--text-image--half\">\n<div class=\"paragraph--text-image__image pos-right size-half\">\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/news.ki.se\/sites\/nyheter\/files\/styles\/article_full_width\/public\/qbank\/HUpresident_custom20260224102552.webp\" alt=\"Am and stading by a podium speaking. Photo: Anna-Lee C Jans\u00e9n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"paragraph--text-image__text\">\n<p>Representing Ethiopia,\u00a0<strong>Dr. Chirotaw Ayele<\/strong>, President of Hawassa University, emphasized the transformative national impact of the PREGART project. He noted PREGART\u2019s vital contribution to strengthening regulatory systems, supporting Ethiopia\u2019s achievement of WHO Regulatory Maturity Level 3. He further underscored that the clinical trial unit established under PREGART played a pivotal role as a vaccine trial site during the Marburg outbreak in Southern Ethiopia, demonstrating strong national research preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>The meeting also celebrated a major milestone from the Ugandan study site.\u00a0<strong>Dr. Yvonne Karamagi<\/strong>\u00a0of Mildmay Hospital announced the formal accreditation of their laboratory, a significant capacity\u2011building achievement made possible through long\u2011term project investment.<\/p>\n<p>The project was officially launched by\u00a0<strong>Dr. Richard Mugahi<\/strong>, Commissioner for Women and Child Health at the Ministry of Health Uganda, who reaffirmed the government\u2019s commitment to research-driven improvements in maternal and child health outcomes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"P465628\" class=\"paragraph paragraph--text-image paragraph--text-image--left paragraph--text-image--half\">\n<div class=\"paragraph--text-image__image pos-left size-half\">\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/news.ki.se\/sites\/nyheter\/files\/styles\/article_full_width\/public\/qbank\/Pregartstudyfiles_custom20260224101315.webp\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">PhD candidate Collins Ankunda, Prof. Eleni Aklillu, and Prof. Jackson Mukonzo during study visit at Mildmay Hospital. Discussions emphasized capacity strengthening, research excellence, regulatory advancement, and coordinated recruitment strategies.
